New York, United States (HRNW)- On 6–7 April 2026, officials of the United Nations warned that attacks targeting civilian infrastructure could violate international humanitarian law, as global tensions—particularly in the Middle East—continue to rise.
A spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed that even when infrastructure may have military relevance, any attack causing excessive civilian harm would be prohibited under international law.
The warning comes amid increasing rhetoric of large-scale strikes on infrastructure, with UN officials cautioning that such actions could result in severe humanitarian consequences, including disruption to hospitals, water systems, and essential services.
The UN reiterated its call for all parties to strictly adhere to international law and prioritize the protection of civilians.
