New York, United States (HRNW) The World Food Programme (WFP) warned on March 31 that its operations are “buckling” due to a massive shipping crunch in the Strait of Hormuz. Approximately 20,000 seafarers are currently stranded on vessels, a situation UN officials describe as having “no precedent” in the post-WWII era. The delays are severely impacting aid delivery to Sudan, South Sudan, and Somalia, with 70,000 metric tonnes of vital food aid currently stuck in ports or on chartered vessels.
