Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Nears 2,000 as Relief Efforts Intensify

Caracas (HRNW)- The death toll from two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela last week has risen to nearly 2,000, while thousands of people have been injured and displaced.

According to authorities, the intensity and frequency of aftershocks have declined, allowing relief and recovery operations to accelerate across the affected areas.

National Assembly Speaker Jorge Rodriguez said during a televised briefing that more than 10,000 people were injured in the earthquakes, while approximately 15,000 residents have been displaced from their homes and relocated to temporary shelters.

He did not provide an official figure for those still missing. However, opposition figures estimate that more than 40,000 people remain unaccounted for, although these figures could not be independently verified.

The two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck Venezuela on June 24 less than a minute apart. The quakes caused widespread destruction, collapsing numerous buildings, damaging major highways, and severely affecting critical infrastructure, including the country’s main international airport.
