New York (HRNW)- Russia has rejected a US-backed resolution against Iran in the United Nations Security Council in New York, calling it an unbalanced and provocative move that could further escalate regional tensions.
According to Iranian state television, the United States, with support from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Qatar, had submitted a resolution to the Security Council. The draft reportedly called on Iran to halt alleged attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and end tolls on commercial shipping.
The Russian delegate opposed the resolution, stating that Washington was once again attempting to escalate tensions in the region through unilateral pressure measures. He further said that the draft resolution was not balanced and appeared to be designed solely to increase pressure on Iran rather than promote constructive dialogue.
Diplomatic observers note that divisions within the Security Council continue to deepen amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly around maritime security and energy routes.
