Geneva, Switzerland (HRNW) — On March 25, 2026, the UNHCR 95th Standing Committee convened to address the dire displacement trends across Africa. Central to the discussions was the war in Sudan, which officials confirmed remains the world’s largest displacement crisis. Over 4 million people have now fled to neighboring countries including Chad, Egypt, and South Sudan. The UN Refugee Agency emphasized the urgent need for a $8.5 billion global budget for 2026 to assist the projected 136 million forcibly displaced and stateless people worldwide, as funding shortages begin to cripple life-saving protection services.
