Geneva, Switzerland (HRNW)- On 17 April 2026, the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) warned that maritime journeys by Rohingya refugees have become the deadliest globally.
UNHCR reported that hundreds have died or gone missing while attempting dangerous sea crossings, with many victims being women and children. The agency emphasized that desperation caused by persecution, lack of citizenship, and reduced humanitarian funding is forcing refugees to take life-threatening risks.
The UN called on regional states to enhance rescue operations and ensure protection for those seeking safety.
