Geneva, Switzerland (HRNW) — As part of its 61st regular session, the UN Human Rights Council held an interactive dialogue on March 24, 2026, with the Special Rapporteur on the right to privacy. The debate centered on the misuse of surveillance technologies under the guise of counter-terrorism. Member states and NGOs expressed alarm over “transnational repression,” where governments use digital tools to target human rights defenders and journalists across borders. The Council urged for a new global framework to ensure that security measures do not infringe upon fundamental civil liberties.
