Washington (HRNW)- US Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib has announced her support for a bill seeking to end approximately $3.3 billion in annual US military aid to Israel. The proposed legislation is expected to be voted on in the US House of Representatives this week.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Palestinian-American Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib said the United States should not continue funding a military institution that, according to her, is facing allegations related to actions in Palestine, Lebanon, and Iran.
Tlaib added that she believes a majority of Americans, particularly many Democratic voters, support ending military aid to Israel and that public opinion should be reflected in legislative decisions.
According to reports, several other prominent Democratic lawmakers, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Greg Casar, and Ilhan Omar, have also expressed support for the bill.
The legislation was introduced by Republican Congressman Thomas Massie, who has frequently criticized US military interventions abroad and has also opposed military action against Iran.
Massie’s position drew criticism from President Donald Trump. According to the report, Massie later lost his Republican primary election to a Trump-backed candidate in what was described as the most expensive US House primary race in history.
Political observers say that US military assistance to Israel has become a major issue in American politics in recent months, with lawmakers from different political backgrounds holding sharply differing views. The upcoming vote is expected to indicate the level of congressional support for the proposal.
