ISLAMABAD (HRNW): The Ministry of Energy (Power Division) has issued a stern warning regarding the country’s worsening power crisis, stating that electricity load shedding is likely to increase significantly if the proposed “Islamabad Agreement” is not finalized.
Hydel and LNG Power Shortfalls:
A spokesperson for the Power Division revealed critical data highlighting the current supply-demand gap:
-
Hydel Generation Slump: Last night, hydel power generation dropped to just 4,950 MW against a total capacity of 11,500 MW, primarily due to lower provincial demand. This resulted in a shortfall of approximately 6,000 MW.
-
LNG Plant Shutdowns: Currently, power plants with a capacity of 5,500 MW remain completely shut down due to the non-availability of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), putting immense pressure on the national grid.
Grid Management and Transmission:
The spokesperson confirmed that while 400 MW of electricity is being consistently transmitted from the south to the central grid, it was not enough to prevent outages. During last night’s peak hours, distribution companies (DISCOs) were forced to implement load management lasting 2 to 2.5 hours.
Economic vs. Peak Load Management:
The Ministry clarified its operational strategy:
-
High-Loss Feeders: “Economic Load Management” will continue on feeders with high line losses as per standard policy. This is distinct from the general peak-time load shedding caused by the fuel crisis.
-
The “Islamabad Agreement”: Officials emphasized that the successful execution of the Islamabad Agreement is vital. Failure to reach this settlement will make extended load shedding across the country inevitable.
Appeal to the Public:
In light of the strained system, the Ministry of Energy has appealed to citizens to practice extreme caution in electricity usage during peak night hours to reduce the risk of further grid instability.
