Lahore (HRNW)- World Book Day is being celebrated in more than a hundred countries around the world, including Pakistan. World Book Day is celebrated every year on April 23 around the world under the auspices of UNESCO, a subsidiary of the United Nations. The celebration of this day began in 1995. In addition, World Book Day is celebrated on March 4 in the United Kingdom and the United States.
The aim of celebrating World Book Day is to promote the love of reading and encourage authors who write good books.
The reasons for the lack of promotion of book reading include low literacy rate, low purchasing power of consumers, increasing use of mobile, internet and electronic media for obtaining information, decreasing trend of good books, lack of government support and lack of provision of adequate resources for libraries, and lack of efforts by families and educational institutions to promote book reading.
On the occasion of World Book Day, booksellers and publishers can play an important role by giving high discounts on books, and can also distribute many books for free.
It should be noted that a book fair is held every year in Tehran, the capital of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which lasts for about two weeks. More than 2,000 domestic and foreign publishers participate in this book fair and discounts of up to 50 percent are given.
