Trump Says He Was Surprised by Public Mourning at Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s Funeral

Washington (HRNW)- US President Donald Trump said he was surprised to see large numbers of Iranians mourning during the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In a telephone interview with journalist Barak Ravid of the American news website Axios, President Trump commented on the funeral ceremonies and the broader situation surrounding US-Iran relations.

According to Trump, Iran’s top leadership and senior officials were gathered in one place during the funeral. He claimed that the United States had the capability to target those present but said it would not do so because, in his words, there would be no one left for future negotiations.

President Trump also said he was surprised by the emotional scenes at the funeral, stating that he had believed many Iranians opposed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Referring to the mourners, he remarked that the tears “may be genuine or may not.”

Trump further claimed that the United States and Iran had agreed to temporarily pause negotiations until the funeral and mourning ceremonies conclude, adding that talks could resume afterward.

He also asserted that Iran was eager to reach an agreement with the United States, although there has been no official confirmation of this claim from Iranian authorities.

According to the report, funeral ceremonies for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed in an attack on February 28, have begun. The funeral procession is expected to continue through Tehran, Qom, Karbala, and Najaf, before the burial in Mashhad on July 9.
