Washington (HRNW)- The administration of US President Donald Trump has sent a civil nuclear energy cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia to Congress, marking a significant step toward expanding peaceful nuclear cooperation between Washington and Riyadh.
According to a foreign news agency, the agreement would allow cooperation on Saudi Arabia’s civilian nuclear program, including electricity generation and other peaceful applications. However, Trump has insisted that a broader agreement with Saudi Arabia should be linked to Riyadh joining the Abraham Accords and formally recognizing Israel.
Saudi Arabia has so far not formally recognized Israel. Trump has also stated that uranium enrichment would not be permitted under the proposed civil nuclear agreement, citing concerns surrounding nuclear non-proliferation.
The development carries wider regional diplomatic significance as Saudi Arabia seeks to diversify its future energy sources and the United States aims to ensure that nuclear cooperation remains within a peaceful and non-proliferation framework.
The agreement will now face review by US lawmakers, with congressional consideration and potential objections expected to play an important role before the deal can be finalized and implemented.
