Salaried Class Pays Record Rs633 Billion in Income Tax, Surpassing Exporters and Real Estate

Islamabad (HRNW)- Pakistan’s salaried class has borne a significant share of the country’s tax burden by paying more income tax than the combined contributions of the exporters and real estate sectors during the last fiscal year.

According to a private TV report, salaried individuals contributed a record Rs633 billion in income tax to the national exchequer during the 2025–26 fiscal year, exceeding the combined tax payments made by influential exporters and property dealers.

According to interim data released by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), the income tax paid by salaried individuals increased significantly from Rs585 billion in the previous fiscal year to Rs633 billion.

The report noted that this amount is higher than the tax collected from several key sectors of the economy, while concerns of the salaried class continue to receive limited attention.

Official documents show that Rs174 billion was collected in taxes from exporters, while Rs191 billion came from real estate sellers. Additionally, Rs87 billion was collected under Section 236-K on property purchases, compared to Rs120 billion in the previous fiscal year.

The retail sector contributed Rs70 billion in withholding tax. The FBR’s tax collection target for the outgoing fiscal year stood at Rs13.010 trillion, while the target for the upcoming fiscal year has been increased to Rs15.264 trillion.

Under the government’s new strategy, direct interaction between tax officials and taxpayers will be reduced. The government has also indicated that it plans to provide tax relief to the salaried class and exporters in the next fiscal year.

These figures highlight that a substantial portion of Pakistan’s income tax revenue comes from salaried employees, whose taxes are deducted directly from their monthly earnings.
