Tehran (HRNW)- The body of martyr Ali Khamenei was placed in a glass coffin at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosque in Tehran, where millions of mourners gathered and chanted slogans against the United States and Israel, vowing revenge.
According to the international news agency, on the day of the funeral of Iran’s martyred Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, feelings of mourning, religious devotion and calls for revenge dominated the atmosphere.
Millions of people gathered in the courtyard of the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosque carrying red flags, which are considered a symbol of revenge in Iran.
While waving the flags, participants shouted slogans including “Revenge, Revenge,” “Death to America,” and “Death to Israel,” while also pledging revenge for the assassination of Khamenei.
In Shia tradition, the red flag symbolizes avenging the blood of the oppressed and demanding justice. Many participants continued chanting slogans against the United States and former President Donald Trump while beating their chests and reciting elegies.
Speaking to the media, mourners said they had come not only to attend the funeral but also to express their determination to seek justice for the slain leader.
Participants also called on the Iranian government to hold those responsible for the assassination accountable and to pursue the matter at the international level.
According to AFP, thousands of mourners carrying red flags waited for the arrival of the coffin in the vast courtyard of the Grand Mosque. As soon as the coffin, wrapped in the Iranian flag, was placed on a high black stage, many people broke down in tears.
The atmosphere echoed with prayers, Quranic recitation, elegies, and mourning rituals. The Iranian national flag, black mourning flags, and photographs of Ali Khamenei from different stages of his life were displayed around the venue, and the public was later allowed to pay their final respects.
Authorities closed all major highways surrounding the Grand Mosque, established security checkpoints, and carried out strict searches of attendees. Thousands of people were also seen lining up outside metro stations from early morning to attend the funeral.
