Criciúma (HRNW): The Mayor of the Brazilian city of Criciúma, Vaguinho Espíndola, took an unusual step to assess shortcomings in the city’s social welfare system by disguising himself as a homeless man and spending nearly an entire day living on the streets.
According to reports, Mayor Vaguinho Espíndola wore a fake beard, dressed in worn-out clothing, and walked through the city’s streets without any security personnel. Over the course of approximately 20 hours, he covered nearly 40 kilometers on foot, asked passersby for spare change at traffic signals, sought assistance from members of the public, and spent time with people experiencing homelessness to better understand the challenges they face.
In a notable development, by the end of the day, members of the municipality’s own social welfare team approached him at a public location to offer assistance, without realizing that the person they were helping was, in fact, the city’s mayor.
Mayor Vaguinho Espíndola said the initiative was not intended to generate publicity or personal recognition. Instead, he explained that the objective was to identify weaknesses in the city’s social welfare and support systems through firsthand experience.
He added that the insights gained during the exercise would be used to improve Criciúma’s social policies and make them more effective, responsive, and compassionate toward vulnerable members of society.
