Sanaa (HRNW)- Heavy fighting has once again erupted between Iran-aligned Houthi rebels and Yemeni government forces, with at least 14 government soldiers reported killed during clashes in the country’s west.
According to the international news agency AFP, the attack occurred in the Hays district of Hodeidah province, where Houthi fighters launched an assault on positions held by the internationally recognized Yemeni government forces.
A military official affiliated with the Yemeni government said government troops responded to the attack, triggering intense clashes that lasted for several hours.
According to the official, government forces succeeded in repelling the Houthi offensive, but 14 government soldiers were killed during the fighting.
The official also claimed that Houthi fighters suffered casualties in the government’s counterattack, although no official figures were provided regarding the number of dead or wounded on the Houthi side.
Hodeidah province and its surrounding areas have remained one of the main battlefronts in Yemen’s long-running civil war, where fighting between the two sides continues despite repeated efforts to secure a ceasefire.
Political analysts say the latest violence highlights the fragile security situation in Yemen and underscores the continuing challenges facing international efforts to achieve a lasting ceasefire and a political settlement to the conflict.
