Canada Announces Retaliatory Tariffs on US Goods Amid Escalating Trade Tensions

Ottawa (HRNW)- Canada has announced retaliatory trade tariffs in response to US tariffs, with Prime Minister Mark Carney saying new duties will be imposed on US steel, electronics and other products from September 8.

Carney said Canada would protect the interests of its workers, farmers, families and businesses, stressing that the country would respond to US trade measures. He described the dispute as a trade war and said Canada would not back down from defending its economic interests.

The announcement came after trade talks between the US and Canada failed. Earlier, US President Donald Trump had announced a 50% tariff on products imported from Canada. As a result, Canadian exports worth around $20 billion to the US are expected to be affected, further escalating trade tensions between the two countries.
