Russia Begins Large-Scale Nuclear Military Drills Amid Rising Ukraine Tensions

Moscow (HRNW)- Russia has launched three-day large-scale nuclear military exercises across the country, involving thousands of troops and strategic military assets.

The drills come amid an increase in Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory and ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s expected important visit to China.

According to a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry, the armed forces are conducting special exercises from May 19 to May 21, 2026, aimed at testing nuclear force readiness and responding to potential external aggression.

Officials said that during the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, which has lasted more than four years, Russia has repeatedly demonstrated its nuclear capabilities and issued warnings regarding their possible use.

Reports further state that the exercises are taking place at a time when the New START nuclear arms control treaty between the United States and Russia has expired, leaving both sides without formal limitations on nuclear development.

The drills reportedly include warplanes, naval vessels, and both conventional and nuclear submarines, and are being viewed as a significant global security development.
