Pakistan and UNOCT Host High-Level Event on Emerging Trends in Global Terrorism

New York (HRNW)- The Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations, in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), organized a major event on the topic of new and emerging trends in terrorism.

The event was attended by diplomats from diverse backgrounds, UN policy experts, counter-terrorism experts from civil society, the private sector and academia, who exchanged views. The event provided a comprehensive discussion on the changing dynamics of terrorism and the challenges faced globally.

The event was co-chaired by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, and UNOCT Acting Under-Secretary-General, Alexander Zoyev. The opening remarks were delivered by both Presidents, while Mr. Rafi Shah, Chief of the Policy, Knowledge Management and Coordination Branch, UNOCT, conducted the moderating duties.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed highlighted the rapidly evolving security threats, the growing trends of xenophobia, racism and intolerance, extremism based on religion or belief, the gaps in the global counter-terrorism framework and sanctions regime. He also highlighted the difficulties faced by national governments in addressing threats that transcend national boundaries and the challenges of accountability of social media platforms and technology companies.

The Ambassador highlighted Pakistan’s unparalleled sacrifices and role in the fight against terrorism, noting the increasing use of modern technology and means by terrorist groups in the regional context. He urged the international community to further strengthen mutual cooperation, information sharing and a comprehensive strategy to address the evolving threats.
