Drone-Based Drain Cleaning Plan Is a New Avenue for Corruption, Says Saifuddin Advocate

Karachi (HRNW): Jamaat-e-Islami Deputy Ameer and Leader of the Opposition in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), Saifuddin Advocate, has alleged that the announcement to use drones for drain cleaning is a new avenue for corruption. Expressing deep concern over the condition of Karachi’s drainage system, he said that instead of immediately commencing cleaning operations, the authorities have come up with another impractical announcement.

He criticized the proposal, stating that those advocating the use of drones for drain cleaning appear to have lost touch with reality, as the garbage clogging Karachi’s drains is visible to everyone without the need for advanced technology. According to him, claims of introducing a modern drainage cleaning system amount to a mockery of the public.

Saifuddin Advocate further alleged that despite 28 years of administration, the city has failed to establish an effective sanitation and solid waste management system, with public funds allegedly lost to corruption. He claimed that Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab secured approvals of PKR 400 million for drain cleaning last year and PKR 600 million this year, yet there is little visible evidence on the ground to suggest that the allocated funds have been utilized effectively. He alleged that while drain cleaning exists on paper, the city’s major drains remain filled with garbage.

He warned that the incompetence of the Sindh Government and the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has left the city vulnerable, adding that even a few millimeters of rainfall could once again inundate Karachi and cause severe hardship for residents.

Calling on the Public Accounts Committee, Saifuddin Advocate urged Chairman Nisar Khuhro to focus on investigating the alleged misuse of billions of rupees allocated for drain cleaning rather than issuing notices to Union Committees over relatively minor financial matters. He said the committee should prioritize major cases of alleged financial irregularities.

Saifuddin Advocate also announced that he would personally inspect all major drains across Karachi later this week and present the findings to the media to expose what he described as the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s poor performance and alleged corruption. He said that the misuse of taxpayers’ money should not be tolerated under any circumstances.
