Washington (HRNW) – The United States has decided to take strict action against parents who fail to pay child support, including possible cancellation of passports for those in default.
According to details, thousands of individuals who have not paid court-ordered child support may face passport cancellation under the new enforcement measures. The US State Department stated that initially, those owing $100,000 or more in child support will be targeted, affecting around 2,700 passport holders.
Officials further said the action could later be expanded to include individuals owing more than $2,500 in child support, as permitted under a 1996 federal law.
US authorities explained that the objective of the measure is to compel defaulting parents to comply with court orders and ensure payment of child support. They added that if a passport is canceled, it may take several weeks to reissue even after the outstanding dues are cleared.
