Modena (HRNW)- Seven people were injured, four of them critically, after a driver rammed his car onto a sidewalk in the Italian city of Modena.
According to Italian authorities, the incident took place on a busy road on Saturday when a speeding vehicle suddenly mounted the sidewalk and struck multiple pedestrians.
Mayor Massimo Mazzetti told local media that initial findings suggest the driver may have deliberately steered onto the sidewalk, first hitting a bicycle and then a woman, leaving both with serious injuries, particularly to the legs.
Officials further reported that the vehicle later crashed into a shop window. Eyewitnesses said the driver exited the car holding a knife but did not manage to harm anyone further.
Police responded quickly and arrested the suspect, who is now under investigation.
A witness stated that the car was moving at high speed and struck pedestrians, adding that the driver appeared to be in an abnormal condition and may have been intoxicated.
Local residents chased the suspect, subdued him, and took the knife away before police arrived. Mayor Massimo Mazzetti praised the courage of the residents, calling their quick response crucial in preventing further harm, while noting that it is still unclear whether the incident was accidental or intentional.
