Damascus (HRNW)- Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has carried out a major reshuffle of top government positions, including the removal of his brother from a key administrative post.
According to reports in Syrian state media, Maher al-Sharaa, the president’s brother, has been accused of nepotism. He had been serving as the secretary-general of the presidency in Damascus, a position his appointment to last year had drawn comparisons with governance practices under former Syrian presidents Bashar al-Assad and his father Hafez al-Assad.
In an official decree, President al-Sharaa appointed Abdul Rahman Badreddin al-Ama, formerly the governor of Homs province, to replace his brother in the role.
It remains unclear what position Maher al-Sharaa will assume next. He is a physician by profession and previously served as Syria’s interim health minister.
