Islamabad (HRNW)- A heated exchange of words between Abid Sher Ali and opposition members during a session of the Senate in Islamabad led to the proceedings being adjourned until 5 PM on Monday. The Upper House session was chaired by Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani, during which reports of nine standing committees and several bills were presented before the House. The Senate also passed the Iqbal Academy Amendment Bill 2026 by a majority vote.
Speaking in the House, Abid Sher Ali said that there was a time when foreign leaders did not take calls from Pakistan’s Prime Minister, but today international engagement with Pakistan has increased. He also commented on regional security matters, saying Pakistan’s armed forces had responded strongly to external aggression and emphasizing the importance of national defense.
Earlier in the session, Senator Maulana Atta-ur-Rehman of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam strongly condemned the killing of Maulana Muhammad Idrees, describing it as a tragic and targeted act. He expressed concern over law and order, stating that violent incidents continue to occur frequently and that his party’s protest over the scholar’s death was stopped by the administration.
Maulana Atta-ur-Rehman also criticized governance in the province, saying that public concerns over security and administration need immediate attention. His remarks further intensified debate in the House before the session was adjourned.
