Ali al-Zaidi Sworn in as Iraq’s New Prime Minister Amid Formation of New Government

Baghdad (HRNW)- Iraq’s new Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi officially took office on Saturday.

According to the Iraqi news agency INA, a ceremony was held in the capital Baghdad where the new prime minister formally assumed charge of his office.

On May 14, the Iraqi parliament expressed confidence in al-Zaidi and 14 ministers of his cabinet, while voting on nine remaining ministerial positions was postponed.

On April 27, the largest parliamentary bloc, the Coordination Framework Alliance, agreed to nominate Ali al-Zaidi for the post of prime minister, after which Iraqi President Nizar al-Amiri assigned him the task of forming a government.

It should be noted that under Iraq’s political quota system, the presidency is held by a Kurdish representative, the prime ministership by a Shiite representative, and the parliamentary speakership by a Sunni representative.
