The oil tanker "Grinch" (R), suspected of belonging to the Russian's shadow fleet, is seen outside the coast of Martigues near the port of Marseille-Fos on January 25, 2026, as it's surveilled by the French Navy. France on January 25, 2026 took into custody the Indian captain of an oil tanker suspected of belonging to Russia's sanctions-busting "shadow fleet" for the vessel failing to fly a flag, prosecutors said. Paris (HRNW)- The French navy has detained the 58-year-old Indian captain of the oil tanker Grinch in the Mediterranean Sea for allegedly violating sanctions imposed on Russia. The captain was handed over to judicial authorities in Fos-sur-Mer for questioning, while the Indian crew remains on board.

The tanker, reportedly coming from Murmansk, Russia, is suspected of being part of a Russian “shadow fleet” used to evade sanctions related to the war in Ukraine. French authorities are investigating the legality of the tanker’s flag and shipping documents. A video released by the French military shows naval personnel boarding the vessel via helicopter.

European countries report that Russia operates a secret fleet of over 400 ships to bypass sanctions, prompting strict action by France and other nations.
