London (HRNW)- British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has formally announced his resignation, bringing his tenure as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party to an end.
Speaking to the media in London, Starmer became emotional while delivering his farewell address. He said that during his leadership, Britain made progress in several areas and strengthened its relationships with international allies.
Reflecting on his time in office, Starmer stated that he was highly motivated when he assumed the premiership two years ago and that the welfare of the British people remained his top priority throughout his tenure.
He said that his government worked to strengthen both the Labour Party and the British economy despite facing numerous challenges. According to Starmer, his administration was often told that the party was weak, but it succeeded in rebuilding its position and advancing key priorities.
“Change does not happen overnight; it takes time,” he said, adding that he would fully cooperate with and support the incoming Prime Minister.
Starmer also revealed that he had informed the British monarch of his decision before making the announcement public.
Addressing questions about the future of the Labour Party, he said the issue was not who would bring change to the party, but whether he was the right person to lead it into the next general election. Accepting that challenge, he announced his resignation from the party leadership.
His departure marks a significant moment in British politics, with attention now turning to the process of selecting a new Labour leader and Prime Minister.
