Kyiv (HRNW) – At least 27 people have been killed in a wave of Russian drone and missile strikes across Ukraine, occurring just as a proposed two-day ceasefire by Moscow draws near. The attacks, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described as “senseless and brutal,” have struck residential areas and critical energy infrastructure across several regions.

In the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, officials reported at least 12 fatalities after Russian airstrikes hit a car workshop and residential buildings, leaving 20 others injured. The eastern city of Kramatorsk in Donetsk saw six deaths and 12 injuries, while four people were killed in Dnipro.

The energy sector also faced significant losses. Five people—including three employees of the state-owned gas company Naftogaz and two emergency rescuers—were killed in targeted attacks on gas facilities in the Poltava and Kharkiv regions. Naftogaz CEO Sergii Koretskyi confirmed that the strikes severely disrupted gas supplies, cutting off service to approximately 3,500 customers.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the assault involved:

  • 11 ballistic missiles

  • 164 drones (the majority of which were intercepted by air defenses)

Russia had previously declared a unilateral ceasefire for May 8 and 9 to coincide with Victory Day celebrations. However, Ukraine has countered by offering an immediate and indefinite ceasefire, calling on the Kremlin to match the gesture with real action rather than “cynical” rhetoric. Meanwhile, Russian officials alleged that Ukrainian drone strikes in Crimea killed five civilians on Wednesday, highlighting the continued escalation on both sides of the border.
