Labour Faces Major Setback in UK Local Elections as Reform UK and Greens Make Gains

London (HRNW)- The ruling Labour Party has suffered a significant political setback in the recent local and regional elections across the United Kingdom, while nationalist groups and the right-wing party Reform UK recorded notable gains, according to international media reports from London.

In the results announced for the Corry Dun Council in London, no party succeeded in securing the required majority of 36 seats. The Labour Party emerged as the leading party with 27 out of 64 seats, but it lost four previously held seats, reflecting a decline in its support.

The opposition Conservative Party secured 25 seats, but also experienced losses, dropping five seats compared to the previous election. Meanwhile, the Green Party made strong gains, winning 8 constituencies with an increase of 6 seats, while both the Liberal Democrats and Reform UK secured 2 seats each.

Across England, results from 134 councils have so far been declared, while outcomes from Lewisham Council and Tower Hamlets are still awaited. Analysts say the most significant political shock came from Reform UK’s unexpected gains, which have raised concerns for traditional political parties.

In London, Labour also faced setbacks, including losing control of Lambeth Council after several years, while the Green Party expanded its presence in urban constituencies.

Following the results, Prime Minister Keir Starmer appointed former Prime Minister Gordon Brown and senior Labour figure Harriet Harman as advisors in an effort to strengthen internal party management. Starmer acknowledged that the Labour government had made “unnecessary mistakes” in its early years and admitted it had failed to fully meet public expectations.

In an interview with the BBC, he further stated that disappointment among voters had increased and confirmed that the party would now review its policies and governance approach to restore public trust and confidence.
