Beijing (HRNW)- A light aircraft reportedly crashed into the CITIC Tower (China Zun), one of the tallest buildings in Beijing, prompting a large-scale emergency response and evacuation of the skyscraper.
According to CNN, the building was evacuated immediately after the aircraft struck the high-rise. Firefighters, police and ambulance teams rushed to the scene and launched rescue operations.
Videos circulating on social media appeared to show debris falling from the 109-story building, while images also showed what appeared to be the aircraft’s tail section and the shattered windshield of a taxi on the ground.
Chinese authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the cause of the crash, or confirmed whether there were any casualties or injuries.
According to the report, officials from a district office of the Beijing Public Security Bureau said they had no immediate information about the incident, while other relevant authorities had not yet responded.
Initial reports indicate the aircraft involved was a Sunward Aurora light sport aircraft, reportedly operated by a local general aviation company that provides services including pilot training, recreational flights and aerial photography.
Unverified FlightRadar24 data shared on social media suggests the aircraft flew erratically after taking off from Beijing Shifosi Airport before crashing into the tower. However, this information has not been officially confirmed.
The incident comes after China introduced stricter regulations on drone operations in Beijing beginning May 1, requiring official permission to purchase, rent or operate drones within the city.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, and further details regarding the cause of the crash and the extent of any damage are expected following an official statement.
