Washington (HRNW)- US President Donald Trump has called Iran’s alleged drone attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz a “stupid violation” of the ceasefire agreement and said he was taking the matter very seriously.
In a statement released on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump claimed that Iran launched four suicide drones at ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
The US President added that one of the drones hit the top of a large and very expensive cargo ship, damaging the vessel, but it was able to continue its journey.
President Trump claimed that the remaining three Iranian suicide drones were shot down in the air by US forces, calling the incident “a stupid violation” of the ceasefire agreement.
According to US media, a Singapore-flagged cargo ship was damaged in a drone attack in the Strait of Hormuz near Oman. All crew members remained safe and no casualties were reported.
Although some commercial ships temporarily restricted their movements as a precaution following the attack, maritime traffic gradually resumed.
Meanwhile, Iran reiterated that it has the right to monitor maritime traffic passing through the Strait of Hormuz and urged Gulf countries not to cooperate with the United States in any actions that could escalate tensions in the region.
It is worth noting that a ceasefire had recently been implemented between the United States and Iran under a memorandum of understanding, and both countries had begun negotiations aimed at reducing regional tensions.
However, this latest incident in the Strait of Hormuz has raised fresh questions about the durability of the ceasefire, while Gulf countries have also expressed concerns regarding Iran’s missile and drone programs.
