Islamabad (HRNW)- The National Assembly session, chaired by Deputy Speaker Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah, approved several important pieces of legislation during proceedings in the federal capital.
Among the major bills passed was the Mandatory Thalassemia Screening Bill 2025, which makes thalassemia testing mandatory for couples before marriage. According to the bill, if a marriage is registered without the required test, the registrar’s license can be canceled and a fine of Rs100,000 imposed. The bill was presented by PPP MNA Dr. Sharmila Farooqui, while an amendment proposed by JUI-F member Naeema Kishor was rejected.
The House also approved the Criminal Procedure Amendment Bill 2025, the Prevention of Unauthorized Use of the Names and Symbols of Pakistan (Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Federal Supervision of Curriculum, Textbooks and Educational Standards (Amendment) Bill 2026.
Meanwhile, the Civil Servants Amendment Bill 2024, presented by PPP MNA Shazia Marri, sparked debate among members. MQM’s Khawaja Izhar-ul-Hassan criticized the bill as being against the spirit of the Constitution, while political tensions emerged between coalition partners when the PPP opposed an MQM bill, leading to protests and a walkout by MQM members.
During the session, opposition and treasury members also raised concerns over foreign policy decisions, regional security issues, and development challenges, highlighting disagreements on national matters.
