Washington (HRNW)- The United States has taken a tough stance against the Afghan Taliban government, officially declaring Afghanistan a “state sponsor of wrongful detention.”

In a statement, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Afghanistan has been designated as a country where individuals are being wrongfully and unlawfully detained. He alleged that the Taliban government continues to use coercive and terrorist tactics to gain policy concessions.

Rubio stated that such actions will increase international pressure on the Taliban and warned that this approach will not succeed. He demanded the immediate release of all American citizens detained in Afghanistan, including Dennis Coyle and Mahmud Habibi.

The US Secretary of State emphasized that Washington is taking the issue of its detained citizens seriously and will continue to apply pressure on the Taliban government until they are released.
