Beirut (HRNW)- Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused the Israeli military of firing white phosphorus shells in populated areas of southern Lebanon, which is considered a violation of international humanitarian law.
According to HRW, verified images show that shells were fired over residential areas in Yohmor on March 3, causing at least two houses to catch fire. Ramzi Qais, a Lebanon researcher at HRW, stated that white phosphorus burns upon contact with oxygen, endangering homes, agricultural land, and civilians, potentially leading to deaths and serious injuries.
The report also geo-verified photos and videos confirming that artillery-fired white phosphorus shells targeted residential areas. The situation in Lebanon remains tense, with 394 people martyred, over 1,000 injured, and millions displaced due to ongoing Israeli airstrikes.
HRW has called on Israel’s allies, including the US, UK, and Germany, to suspend arms supplies to Israel and conduct an investigation into the attacks.
