Train Driver Killed, Dozens Injured in Major Passenger Train Collision Near London

Bedford (HRNW)- A train driver was killed and several passengers were injured in a horrific collision between two passenger trains near the city of Bedford, north of London, United Kingdom. Authorities say nine people remain in critical condition following the accident.

According to British media reports, the accident occurred at around 5:15 p.m. local time on Friday when two passenger trains traveling toward London collided. The impact was severe, resulting in the death of one train driver at the scene.

Emergency services, including rescue teams, police, firefighters, and medical personnel, quickly responded and transported the injured to nearby hospitals.

British Transport Police Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsay said that more than 80 injured people were taken to hospitals for treatment. According to the latest updates, 28 people remain hospitalized, while nine are reported to be in critical condition.

An eyewitness and passenger, Dr. Peter Knapp, stated on social media that the collision occurred suddenly and caused one of the train carriages to derail. He said several passengers suffered serious injuries, including broken legs and other trauma.

Videos shared online show the front of one train crashing into the rear of another. Fortunately, most of the carriages remained upright, helping to prevent an even greater loss of life.

Initial reports indicate that one train was traveling from Nottingham, while the other was operating between Corby and London’s St. Pancras International Station. Investigators believe the Corby service may have struck the rear of the other train.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the incident as a “very sad tragedy” and extended condolences to the victims and their families. King Charles III also expressed sorrow over the accident and said his thoughts were with those affected.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch and British Transport Police have launched a joint investigation into the cause of the crash. Officials cautioned that it is too early to determine exactly what led to the collision.

The tragedy has reignited discussions about rail safety across the United Kingdom, while train services on the affected route have been temporarily disrupted.
