Sindh Assembly Echoes With Protests Over Water Shortage, MQM Raises Slogans

Karachi (HRNW)- MQM members protested strongly in the Sindh Assembly against the water cut in Karachi, due to which the house began to present the scene of a fish market.

The Sindh Assembly session was held under the chairmanship of Deputy Speaker Sindh Assembly Naveed Anthony, where MQM members started protesting strongly and raising slogans against the water cut in Karachi. The members raised slogans of “Give water to Karachi”.

The Deputy Speaker said that they will discuss it after the questions and answers, however, the MQM members continued their protest and said that the important issue of water is to discuss it first.

The Deputy Speaker said that business would be suspended and the point of objection discussed. Questions and answers related to the Fisheries and Livestock Department started amidst noise.

After the question hour, Opposition Leader Ali Khorshidi, speaking on a point of order, said that if an attempt is made to suppress his voice, no one would be able to speak a single word, and asked members to “close the fish market.”

During his speech, government members also protested. Ali Khorshidi said that government members forget they are in government and that the assembly is “not a Friday market.”

He further said that Karachi is currently presenting the scene of Karbala, with citizens suffering due to severe water shortages. He claimed there was no water in areas including Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Orangi, while even arranging water tankers had become difficult.

Law Minister Zia Lanjar responded that the opposition should not politicize the water issue, adding that the K-4 project and Hub Canal scheme are underway to improve Karachi’s water supply. He admitted that water theft also remains a major challenge.

Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami member Muhammad Farooq highlighted severe sewerage issues in his constituency, saying entire neighborhoods had turned into ponds due to delays in drainage work ahead of Eid-ul-Adha.

Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah assured the House that work on resolving the issue is ongoing and would be completed soon.
