UNICEF is reporting a visible increase in acute malnutrition among children in Yemen, as renewed fighting disrupts access to healthcare and treatment centres.
UNICEF Yemen Representative Akhil Iyer told reporters in Geneva that the agency is particularly concerned about an increase in severe cases of acute malnutrition. The situation is developing as renewed hostilities force families from their homes and make access to essential health and humanitarian services more difficult.
UNICEF had already warned earlier this month that renewed hostilities were displacing families, killing and injuring children and disrupting access to healthcare and education.
The latest warning adds to concerns over the humanitarian situation facing children in Yemen, where malnutrition, displacement and limited access to essential services remain major challenges.
