Peshawar (HRNW)- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has said consultations have been held over the possibility of imposing Governor’s Rule in the province, arguing that the Constitution provides for such a measure.
Speaking to the media in Peshawar, Kundi also criticized the PTI over its planned September 27 long march toward Islamabad, claiming that the party was facing difficulties in preparing for the protest and that some of its members were seeking arrest. These remarks represent the governor’s assessment of the political situation.
Kundi criticized the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s proposed changes to the police system, saying the provincial police should not be subjected to political control. He said police personnel in KP receive comparatively low salaries and expressed opposition to measures that, in his view, could increase political influence over the force.
He also objected to the reported proposal to give the provincial government greater authority over the appointment and transfer of senior police officers, saying he would oppose what he considers inappropriate changes to the police structure.
The governor linked his comments on Governor’s Rule to what he described as continuing problems involving law and order, terrorism, governance, and political confrontation in the province. He said the imposition of Governor’s Rule would not, by itself, be unconstitutional, but any such step would have to follow the constitutional and legal process.
Kundi’s latest remarks differ from statements made earlier this week by Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, who said the federal government had no intention of imposing Governor’s Rule in KP.
The debate comes amid heightened tensions between the federal government and the PTI-led KP administration ahead of the party’s planned September 27 march, with disagreements also continuing over policing, governance, and the use of provincial resources.
