The World Health Organization has announced an expansion of its prequalification programme for medical devices, widening the range of products that can receive WHO quality assurance.
The expanded programme will cover additional life-saving technologies, including contraceptive devices and innovative tuberculosis screening technologies. WHO said the move is intended to help countries identify medical products that meet international standards for quality, safety and effectiveness.
The prequalification system already covers areas including in-vitro diagnostic products and male circumcision devices. WHO said the expansion is part of efforts to improve access to quality-assured health technologies, particularly in countries with limited regulatory capacity.
