Federal Sharia Court Declares 2022 Attempted Suicide Law Un-Islamic

Islamabad (HRNW)- The Federal Sharia Court has issued a major ruling regarding the law on attempted suicide, declaring the 2022 legislation null and void for being against Islamic principles.

According to reports, the court accepted petitions challenging the law and ruled that the decriminalization of attempted suicide was not in accordance with Sharia requirements.

In its decision, the court restored the section of the Pakistan Penal Code that had been removed under the 2022 legislation. Following the ruling, attempted suicide has once again regained the status of a criminal offense under the law.

The reserved verdict was announced by a bench comprising Chief Justice Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman, Justice Muhammad Anwar Iqbal, and Justice Amir Khan. The petitioners were represented by Advocate Hammad Hassan Dar and Advocate Azam Malik.

It is important to note that the provision criminalizing attempted suicide had been abolished through legislation passed in 2022.
