The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) warned on 2 October that food insecurity is increasing in areas of Yemen affected by renewed fighting, as displacement disrupts markets and limits humanitarian access.
According to WFP, more than 149,000 people have been displaced by the latest escalation, citing figures from the International Organization for Migration. Recent monitoring in accessible areas found that 74 percent of households were unable to meet their basic food needs — the highest level recorded this year.
Across Yemen, an estimated 18.3 million people face acute food insecurity, while 2.2 million children under five are acutely malnourished, including 500,000 with severe acute malnutrition.
WFP said it had assisted more than 70,000 people in displacement hotspots in Ta’iz and Lahj and was preparing to expand emergency support if further conflict causes additional displacement. The agency also reported that more than 3,700 people had crossed into Djibouti from Yemen by late September. WFP update
