UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell has called for children’s protection and needs to be placed at the centre of Lebanon’s recovery, following a three-day visit to the country.
In a news note published on 2 October, UNICEF said Russell visited southern Lebanon and Beirut and met children and families affected by the country’s conflict and economic crisis.
Russell urged urgent action to protect children from the continuing impact of these overlapping challenges. UNICEF said the needs and rights of children should be considered in recovery planning as families work to rebuild their lives.
The visit follows a UNICEF report released on 30 September, which found that four in five households in Lebanon were struggling to afford basic necessities, with children facing increased risks of hunger, interrupted education and child labour. UNICEF update
