Global life expectancy has almost recovered to its pre-pandemic level, reaching 73.3 years in 2023, compared with 73.4 years in 2019, according to new estimates released by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 2 October.

The estimates show that healthy life expectancy has recovered more slowly. It stood at 62.8 years in 2023, still 0.4 years below its 2019 level.

WHO also reported that noncommunicable diseases accounted for 74 percent of deaths worldwide in 2023, up from 58 percent in 2000. Eight of the ten leading causes of death were noncommunicable diseases, including cardiovascular conditions, diabetes and dementia.

The agency said the data, covering trends from 2000 to 2023, can help countries identify changing health needs and plan health services. WHO estimates
