Sindh Forest Dept and SSUET Sign MoU to Develop 200-Acre Urban Forest

KARACHI (HRNW): In a major stride toward environmental sustainability and climate resilience, the Sindh Forest Department and Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Thursday, February 26, 2026. The partnership aims to significantly expand Karachi’s green cover by establishing a massive urban forest at the university’s new campus in Education City.

Under the terms of the agreement, the Sindh Forest Department will provide technical expertise and a diverse range of indigenous saplings suitable for the local climate. In return, SSUET has committed to overseeing the long-term irrigation, protection, and maintenance of the plantation. The centerpiece of this collaboration is the transformation of 200 acres of land into a thriving urban forest, designed to mitigate the “urban heat island” effect and provide a balanced ecosystem for the city.

Beyond the environmental benefits, the project is envisioned as a living laboratory and educational platform for students and the local community. By integrating academic research with practical conservation, the initiative seeks to raise awareness about the critical importance of reforestation in the face of global climate change. This joint venture represents a successful model of public-academic partnership dedicated to improving the urban landscape and public health through nature-based solutions.
