Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah Conducts Surprise Price Inspections Across Karachi Markets

KARACHI (HRNW): Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah carried out an extensive field visit to Karachi’s major commercial hubs on Thursday, February 26, 2026, to personally monitor the prices of essential commodities and ensure the enforcement of official rate lists during Ramadan. Accompanied by Provincial Minister Nasir Shah, Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab, and Commissioner Karachi Hassan Naqvi, the Chief Minister began his tour at Burns Road, where he inspected the cost of cooked foods and fruits. During the visit, he interacted directly with citizens and shopkeepers, purchasing a kilogram of Dahi Baray at the official rate of Rs 600 and expressing surprise at the Rs 1,200 per kg price of Jalebi, which the Commissioner noted is currently not on the notified list. In a gesture of goodwill, the Chief Minister insisted on paying full price for his purchases and provided Rs 5,000 to a person with a disability to assist with their Iftar shopping.

The delegation then moved to Empress Market, where the Chief Minister compared displayed price lists with actual market rates, observing that some vendors were selling produce like berries at Rs 100 per kg, which was actually below the official rate of Rs 120 as the Iftar hour approached. He verified the prices of various staples, including apples at Rs 265, pomegranates at Rs 300, and vegetables such as bottle gourd and eggplant at Rs 58 and Rs 52 per kg, respectively. When questioned about administrative conduct, shopkeepers informed the Chief Minister that they were not facing any harassment from local authorities. Additionally, CM Murad Ali Shah visited the KMC Price Complaint Cell and reviewed the ongoing construction of the new Meat Market, where Mayor Murtaza Wahab provided a briefing on restoration efforts. Concluding his visit, the Chief Minister issued stern directives to the city administration to remain vigilant against hoarding and consumer exploitation, ensuring that any public complaints are addressed with immediate and effective action throughout the holy month.
