New York (HRNW)- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over the escalation of Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon and called for an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Lebanese territory.
In a statement on social media, Guterres expressed regret over civilian casualties, the hardships faced by residents and widespread destruction caused by Israeli military operations and evacuation orders.
The UN chief urged all parties to immediately end hostilities, stressing that the authority to use force on Lebanese soil should remain with the Lebanese state. He also called for respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Guterres emphasized that urgent steps are needed to protect civilians and restore peace rather than further escalation and military action. His appeal comes amid continued displacement and destruction in southern Lebanon, increasing international pressure to reduce tensions between Israel and Lebanon.
