Yellow Line BRT Case: SHC Issues Show-Cause Notice to Anti-Corruption Chief

Karachi (HRNW) — The Sindh High Court has issued a show-cause notice to the Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) over the alleged delay in investigating a case involving Rs8.5 billion in alleged financial irregularities in Karachi’s Yellow Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project.

The court expressed concern over the continued failure to submit a charge sheet following registration of the FIR and questioned whether the unexplained delay could have benefited the accused or otherwise prejudiced the prosecution case. The court also asked the authorities to explain why the matter should not be referred to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for further investigation.

The case relates to alleged irregular advance payments to contractors in the Karachi Mobility Project. An inquiry reported advance payments totalling approximately Rs8.567 billion in connection with the New Jam Sadiq Bridge, Depot-I at Dawood Chowrangi and Depot-II near Indus Hospital.

Former Yellow Line Project Director Zameer Abbasi, one of the principal accused, was granted post-arrest bail by the Sindh High Court against a Rs10 million surety bond. In its bail order, the court noted shortcomings or “lacunas” in the investigation.

The Anti-Corruption Establishment had registered the case following an inquiry into alleged financial mismanagement in the project. The allegations include misuse of authority and irregular advance payments to contractors. The accused have the right to defend themselves, and any criminal liability will ultimately be determined through due legal process.
