New York (HRNW)- Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, discussing major regional and international developments, including peace efforts in the Middle East, Palestine, Afghanistan, and counterterrorism.
During the meeting, Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the multilateral system and emphasized the central role of the United Nations in promoting international peace and development. He also reiterated Islamabad’s adherence to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
The Prime Minister praised Guterres for his leadership and his efforts to uphold the UN Charter and international cooperation.
Discussing the Middle East, Shehbaz Sharif stressed that dialogue and diplomacy should remain central to resolving regional tensions and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to supporting peace and stability. He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and statehood.
Shehbaz Sharif also raised concerns over the rise of Islamophobia, particularly in Pakistan’s immediate neighborhood, and called for effective international measures to address the issue.
The situation in Afghanistan was also discussed, with the Prime Minister highlighting Pakistan’s concerns over the increase in terrorism originating from Afghan soil.
Guterres acknowledged Pakistan’s role at the United Nations and its contributions to international peace and security. He also appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediation efforts aimed at facilitating peaceful solutions to regional conflicts and commended the country’s sacrifices in combating terrorism.
The meeting took place as world leaders gathered in New York for the UN General Assembly, where regional conflicts, terrorism, international security, and diplomatic efforts to resolve ongoing crises remain key issues on the agenda.
