Washington (HRNW)- The Pentagon has given US defense industry leaders 21 days to submit plans for significantly increasing weapons production and accelerating deliveries amid growing concerns over shortages of critical military equipment.
According to The Washington Post, citing a Defense Department memorandum, the Pentagon has directed major US defense companies to develop plans aimed at rapidly expanding weapons production and speeding up delivery schedules.
Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg wrote in the memo that industry leaders have no more than 21 days to present plans for significantly faster and more aggressive delivery timelines and increased production of weapons involving critical capabilities.
Feinberg emphasized that lengthy development plans are no longer acceptable and called for an immediate and substantial acceleration of production programs.
The directive comes amid growing reports of declining US weapons stocks following increased military demands and the supply of weapons to support overseas operations.
The Pentagon’s move is aimed at strengthening US defense production capacity and ensuring that critical weapons and military equipment can be manufactured and delivered more quickly.
