Washington (HRNW)- The poor condition of power transformers in the United States has worried the government. According to reports, more than half of the power transformers in the United States have become inoperable.
The US Department of Energy has revealed in a report that there are an estimated 80 million power transformers in use in the United States. According to the Power System Technology report, 55% of the transformers have reached their end of life. Therefore, if renewable energy is run on these same transformers, the entire power system may fail, and America will be plunged into darkness.
Due to the transformer crisis, renewable energy has become a bottleneck for the United States, and the risk of America being plunged into darkness is looming. Most transformers are 33 years old, while their maximum lifespan is 35 years, while about 20% of transformers are more than 25 years old, and only 25% of transformers are currently in reliable condition.
The US Department of Energy has also warned that old transformers could fail at any time. Renewable energy was being emphasized due to climate change, but now the US has changed its position. The Trump administration fears that renewable energy could cause blackouts.
